After IM Residency

Board Certification

The primary goal of the Internal Medicine Residency Program is to train physicians to practice safe, evidence-based, high quality care for patients.  Complementary to this is the successful completion of the certifying examination for the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).  Graduates from this program have been highly successful in passing this exam.  For the 2006 and 2007 exams, our graduates had a 100% pass rate.  Over the past three years (2005-2007), our graduates have a 96% pass rate.

Fellowship Placement

Residents graduating from the Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital have pursued a number of subspecialty careers.  The Internal Medicine Residency Program effectively prepares physicians for any fellowship program.  Faculty members aid residents in their candidacy, and more than 95% of residents applying for fellowship have been accepted.  The following is a list of fellowships obtained by graduating residents over the past ten years:

Practice Opportunities

Graduates from the Internal Medicine Program have their choice of hospital-based practice, outpatient practice, or traditional practice.  Residents frequently stay in the Denver area, but also relocate around the state of Colorado and across the United States.  The Internal Medicine Faculty advises residents through our mentoring program to choose and succeed in a practice that fits them personally.  Additionally, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital has an active program to assist residents in establishing primary care practices.  The following is a graph illustrating the type of practice our graduates have entered after completing their residency.
