Caritas Clinic

For more than 40 years, the Caritas Clinic, which is the Latin term for charity and love, has been meeting the community's growing need for acute illness intervention and chronic disease management, as well as prevention and screening. The Clinic serves adults and strives to deliver the highest quality care to our patients.

Resident physicians treat a broad spectrum of adult illnesses, which include heart, lung and gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, arthritis and others. The Surgery Clinic provides pre and post-operative care for minor and major surgical procedures accomplished in either inpatient or outpatient settings. All necessary hospitalization is coordinated at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital.

All Internal Medicine residents in the categorical track receive their training in ambulatory care here. The Clinic serves patients with a broad array of medical problems. Our ambulatory care program is an environment in which the resident physician is expected to take the lead in all decisions regarding their patients, and to serve as the patient's primary care provider under the supervision of the Internal Medicine Faculty. The residents follow their patients throughout their residency training, thereby maximizing continuity of care. In addition, a didactic curriculum of core outpatient topics is presented weekly, by either the attending or residents.

If a Clinic patient is hospitalized at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital, house staff continue to follow the patient in the hospital and to serve as the principle physician for the management of the patient, writing progress notes, and serving as the main conduit for communication with hospital staff and family. During office hours, there is support from Nurse Practitioners and Medical Assistants to assist with phone calls, prescription refills, and urgent visits. If a patient becomes ill after hours, a resident physician covering for the practice is available. Because of these interactions, patients strongly identify with the resident as being their primary care provider, and the resident in turn becomes proficient in managing all aspects of outpatient medicine, as well as the transition between outpatient and inpatient care.
