IM Research Opportunities + Scholarly Activities

Dr. Gibbons + Dr. Nelson presenting at EKG Conference

Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical and basic research projects throughout their training.  Each resident is assigned to a Faculty mentor who is available to assist in developing projects.  Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital has a dedicated research department for physicians to conduct clinical research.  For those residents interested in the basic sciences, research may be conducted through our affiliation with the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Residents who perform research are given the opportunity to present their work at multiple venues.  The American College of Physicians (ACP) sponsors an annual Associates' Meeting locally, a state-wide meeting, and a national meeting.  Additionally, the Society for Hospital Medicine offers a venue for Residents at their annual national meeting.  Over the past eighteen years, Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital has ranked in the top 5% of Internal Medicine Programs for national ACP poster presentations.
