Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital Graduate Medical Education Residency program uses ONLY the ERAS system (Electronic Residency Application System) for each year's application process and match. This service necessitates electronic applications only. Please contact ERAS for more information on the application process.

Residency Application Information

The General Surgery Residency Program Application deadline is December 12, 2009, applications must be complete by this date:

We offer three categorical positions and nine preliminary positions, and it is the same application process for both. 

• All positions are filled through the NRMP. 
• Minimum USMLE score is 200 (step 1 must be passed on first attempt). 
• IMGs must have 12 months of clinical experience in US hospitals (not observerships). 
• IMGs must hold valid ECFMG certificate, prior to NRMP deadline for submission of rank list. 
•  As a general rule, we sponsor no visas.

The following information is required for your application to be accepted for review:

1. Personal Statement
2. Dean's Letter 
3. Medical school transcript 
4. Three letters of recommendation; one of these must be from the Chair of Surgery 
5. USMLE transcript 
6. Valid ECFMG certification (if required)

Clerkship Application

The following information is required for your application to be accepted for review:

1. An abbreviated CV
2. Personal statement 
3. Written approval from the Dean of your Medical School, and should list your class rank 
4. USMLE scores 
5. Medical school transcripts 
6. Two letters of recommendation and 
7. Proof of up-to-date immunizations.

We also ask that medical clerkship applicants provide proof of professional liability insurance. Many medical schools now provide this insurance coverage for students who serve electives away from school, and verification of such must come from the Dean's office.
