Medical Student Sub-Internship & Application
The General Surgery Residency program at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital is affiliated with the University of Colorado Health Science Center (UCHSC). We offer third year clerkships to UCHSC students. Clerkships are filled on a first come, first served basis. We offer three four-week rotations each month, beginning in August.
We offer a subinternship to fourth year medical students nationwide. Subinternships are also on a first come, first served basis. Applicants are required to meet the same criteria for our ERAS application for residency.
Students are assigned to one of the general surgery services during their clerkship, which is composed of at least one or two PGYI residents, one PGYIII and the Chief Surgical Resident. Duties include pre-operative evaluations of patients' problems, assistance in the operating room, post-operative orders and follow-up while the patient is in the hospital. Students also attend clinic on a rotational basis with their team. Students may write orders, but they need to be countersigned by one of the regular surgical house staff, and they will have no legal responsibility for patient care. Students' work is evaluated by the General Surgery Residency program director, the attending staff and residents from their team and forwarded to their medical school.
