General Surgery Curriculum Overview
The program is based primarily at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital, and the General Surgery residents rotate among five other major institutions.
The Children's Hospital
The Children's Hospital is a regional pediatric center and admits more than 6,000 patients yearly. PGYII residents work closely for two months with a large staff of pediatric surgeons managing all aspects of pediatric surgery, including transplants and burns. The Children's Hospital is about a thirty minute drive from Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital. It is a brand new facility at the University of Colorado Fitzsimmons Campus.
Denver Health Medical Center
As Colorado's Level I trauma center, Denver Health Medical Center provides PGYII residents with an intensive two month SICU experience. Responsibilities include critical care, ventilator management and invasive procedures. Denver Health Medical Center provides PGYIV residents direct hands-on primary care experience in and out of the operating room, managing trauma patients under scrutiny of nationally recognized traumatologists. Residents rotate for a total of four months. Denver Health Medical Center is about a ten minute drive from Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital.
Presbyterian/St. Luke's
Presbyterian/St. Luke's provides PGYII residents with a two month experience in kidney and pancreas transplant surgery. Presbyterian/St. Luke's is located directly across the street from Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital.
University of Colorado Health Sciences Center/University Hospital
University Hospital provides PGYII residents with a two month experience in liver, kidney and pancreas transplant surgery. This rotation is performed concurrent with the Presbyterian/St. Luke's rotation. University Hospital is located on the University of Colorado Fitzsimmons campus (nearby The Children's Hospital). It is about a thirty minute drive from Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital.
Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland
Medical Center of the Rockies provides PGYIV residents with a two month rotation. Medical Center of the Rockies is located approximately an hour north of Denver. An apartment is provided.

Didactics and Conferences
The General Surgery Residency program provides an extensive series of weekday conferences. The goal of the conferences is to provide an environment that continues clinical learning coupled with the exchange of ideas, all related to the care of surgery patients.

We keep Saturday morning free of rounds and conferences, so that each resident may have one day off per week free from clinical duties.
We comply with work hour restrictions. On average, residents have every second weekend on-call in-house with two days free of clinical duties in a two week period. Categorical residents are required to participate in either laboratory or clinical research, and they are encouraged to present and publish the results of their studies.
