Medical Student Clerkship Information & Application

The Family Medicine Residency program offers many opportunities for medical students to spend time with us at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital.  We offer a Family Medicine Clerkship to fourth year students. Clerkships are filled on a first come, first served basis and preference is given to students strongly considering family medicine residency after medical school. Clerkships are usually four weeks in length though two week rotations are also possible.  We can also arrange shorter visits to help you get to know us as a program.  We host students from August through February.  Applications are accepted beginning March 1.

The Family Medicine Clerkship is designed to familiarize students with the practice of family medicine as it relates to ongoing comprehensive care of the patient.  The student's responsibilities are divided between office practice in the Bruner Family Medicine Clinic and the in-patient family medicine service in the hospital.  Throughout the clerkship, emphasis is placed on the development of interviewing skills, physical assessments, patient management, and interdisciplinary coordination of patient care.  Students are expected to participate in rounds, conferences, and case presentations.  Students work closely with both the family medicine faculty and upper level residents.

Eligibility Requirements

We will need the following documentation prior to reviewing your application for approval: (1) letter from your Dean indicating you are enrolled and in good standing, and have permission to take the elective, (2) verification of health insurance, (3) verification of malpractice insurance, (4) verification of TB testing and immunization status.
