Sleep Problems and Disorders
According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep problems and disorders affect 70 million Americans. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most common sleep disorder affecting approximately 18 million Americans. Symptoms of OSA include excessive daytime sleepiness, snoring and breathing pauses.
Simply put, OSA is when a person stops breathing repeatedly during sleep. It is a breathing disorder where the upper airway (throat) repeatedly collapses during sleep, causing breathing to pause or stop. This is called apnea. Apnea causes a cycle of suffocating and waking up, creating lower oxygen levels and placing a strain on the heart.
OSA can be associated with:
-
Depression
-
Stroke
-
Diabetes
-
High blood pressure
-
Heart failure
-
Irregular heartbeat
OSA is treatable. The most common and effective treatment is called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). The flow of air is delivered through a small mask that fits over your nose and/or mouth. The pressurized air acts like a splint to keep the airway open.
Treating OSA has been proven to:
-
Reduce blood pressure
-
Improve glucose control in diabetics
-
Reduce risk of heart disease
-
Reduce risk of auto accidents
-
Improve overall health and quality of life
