Welcome to the General Surgery Residency Program
Our five-year General Surgery Residency program provides a broad clinical experience in all of the defined categories in general surgery. The program has 15 categorical and 9 preliminary residents. Each year three Post Graduate Year I (PGYI) categorical resident enters the five year track to prepare for General Surgery Boards, and nine PGYI preliminary residents enter the one-to-three year track preliminary to a surgery specialty.
Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital has one of the busiest surgery centers in the city of Denver with approximately 16,000 operative procedures performed annually. On completion of training, a chief resident will have performed as many as 1,400 major cases. More surgery is done at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital than can be covered by all the residents, affording residents the unique opportunity for a broad experience in the major components of general surgery. Because there are no competing specialty surgical fellowship programs at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital, residents share responsibility for patients in all surgical fields.
We are a non-pyramidal program in compliance with the RRC for surgery. Most of our graduates enter private-practice general surgery in medium sized cities in the western United States. About 20 percent of our graduates pursue fellowship training. |
