The Cancer Registry at ELMC was established in 1968, and has played an important role in supporting ELMC's ACoS Approved Cancer Program.
Since 1982 ELMC has received the distinguished approval and accreditation as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program.
The Cancer Registry's main purpose is to identify eligible cases, collect demographic, diagnostic, and treatment information, which is then entered into the registry in the form of an abstract. This abstract is reported to the Colorado Central Cancer Registry as well as to the National Cancer Data Base. Patient information is confidential and all HIPPA and state privacy laws are obeyed in the process. At the state and national level registry data is used in research and studies to make advances in future cancer care. At the facility level, data from the registry is used to project and assess future needs for ELMC's patients. In order to track recurrences and additional treatments, the cancer registry performs lifetime follow up on all patients in the registry on an annual basis.
The Cancer Registry also coordinates and supports Tumor Board, Cancer Committee and ensures that the CoC (Commission on Cancer) standards are being met.
In 2006 the Cancer Registry entered 1,157 new analytical cases (cases with primary diagnosis and/or treatment provided at ELMC) into the registry database. Approximately 8,132 cases are currently receiving annual follow-up at an overall rate of 92%, exceeding the required CoC standard.
The top five sites diagnosed and treated at ELMC in 2006 continue to be breast, prostate, colon, lung and bladder cancers.
