As a physician with Exempla Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, I have had the privilege of being involved in breast reconstruction since 1987. Breast reconstruction is an exciting and satisfying portion of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Techniques and technology continue to improve in an attempt to restore a breast to a near normal shape, size and appearance after mastectomy
No longer does a woman have to be defined by having breast cancer or mastectomy. Reconstructive surgery helps in those efforts in putting beast cancer treatment behind her and to continue with a fulfilling life
Breast reconstruction is an important integral treatment of breast cancer. Many options exist for a woman whether she is to undergo mastectomy, partial mastectomy, deformities from radiation treatment or preventative mastectomy.
It is important to choose a surgeon that is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to guide them through the process. A woman can then explore a personalized plan for reconstruction, either beginning immediately at the time of mastectomy or in a delayed fashion.
Reconstructive techniques usually involve implant device technology alone, use of a woman's own tissue (autogenous) alone, or combination of the two. Later, stages may include options to achieve best symmetry and nipple and areola reconstruction.
In this very personal decision and plan, a woman can be guided and explore the many options while explaining the risks, benefits and timing. For example, options in timing or recommended techniques may change if radiation therapy has already been used or is planned in the future.
Equally important is trying to achieve symmetry if one breast has or is undergoing surgical treatment for cancer. Intervention on the opposite side may include recommendations for reduction, lift or augmentation.
Besides mastectomy, oncoplastic techniques are available to achieve the best shape size and appearance following lumpectomy or partial mastectomy. Reconstructive techniques are also available for late deformity, deformity after radiation treatment, or post lumpectomy deformities.
Exempla Lutheran Medical Center is committed to providing these services as an important component of our comprehensive cancer program.
