Adjusting to and living with a diagnosis of cancer can be overwhelming and confusing for many people. The Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center has oncology social workers available to help you find your way through the new challenges that cancer presents. These caring professionals specialize in mobilizing internal and external resources to help reduce stress and inspire the strength needed to face whatever lies ahead.   Oncology Social Workers also serve as advocates and liaisons to help you address important needs and concerns.

When should you contact an Oncology Social Worker?

You or your family member can speak with an oncology social worker anytime throughout your cancer experience.  You do not need a referral from your doctor to do so. Social workers are part of your cancer care team and are available to help anytime before, during and after your course of treatment.

If any of the following topics are of concern for you, feel free to call us:

  • Planning and preparing for the experience of cancer treatment
  • Feeling overwhelmed and needing support and just want to talk about it with someone who is knowledgeable, compassionate and patient
  • Having intense feelings of sadness, worry, anger, or grief
  • Adjusting to fatigue, hair loss and other side effects of treatment
  • Considering joining a Support Group
  • Exploring resources available to you for information, support and financial assistance
  • How to talk to others about cancer (children, friends, co-workers)
  • Keep others updated about your cancer experience without wearing yourself out
  • Understanding your workplace rights when you have cancer
  • Thinking about Advance Directives:  Living Will, Medical Durable Power of Attorney and "Five Wishes"
  • Long-term Care, Assisted Living or Hospice services
  • Accessing community resources for Respite, Home Health Care or Medical Equipment
  • Having concerns about sexual function and fertility (such as Sperm Banking)
  • Curious about complementary and integrative care services - What is effective and safe?  (Healing touch, acupuncture, massage, mind-body practices, etc.)
  • Worrying about adult or child safety
  • Considering the questions of life after cancer treatment - Now what?
  • Managing caregiver stress
