Talking about a disease that's claimed so many of our mothers, daughters and friends can be scary. But as one of the most common causes of cancer death for Colorado women, what you know about breast cancer can save your life.
Let's start with this: 95 percent of women diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer are still alive five years later. Early detection saves lives and keeps families whole.
You should be getting a mammogram every year. And each month, take a few moments out of your day to conduct a self breast exam. If you feel a new thickness, lump or knot, or if you see a change in breast size, a rash or puckering of your skin, call your doctor. If you don't have a doctor, call us.
At the Breast Care Center at Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital, a doctor who is fellowship-trained in breast imaging will read your mammogram. And chances are one mammogram each year is all you'll need.
But if your exam reveals a breast-health issue, we also can provide state-of-the-art comprehensive treatment. Our dedicated breast surgeon, along with our entire staff of patient navigators, physical therapists, pharmacists and a psychologist will provide you with the most compassionate and timely care.
Now it's your turn to talk. Reach out to the women in your life and insist they monitor their breast health and contact their doctor with any concern.
